I struggled with eating disorders through all of my teen years. It first started as restrictive eating, cutting calories, and starving myself, until I reached 56 pounds. My therapist, at the time, diagnosed me with anorexia. I eventually couldn’t resist the natural human urge to eat. That night, I gobbled down everything in sight and threw it all up. This is how I began to struggle with bulimia.
I didn’t like how I had to hide my obsession, and how distant my parents became while I was going through anorexia and bulimia. So I did some research and came across the vegan diet. What started off as a way to begin eating again, ended up as another obsession over food called orthorexia. I “followed” a vegan diet. It became more common as many health bloggers began promoting their diet and exercise plans. Many young audience members were attracted to these trends and what started off as something positive ended up as an obsession to keep up with a fad.
